Graphene: a Superb Material Lighter yet Stronger Than Steel

The scientist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has found graphene material which claimed to be ten times stronger than steel but also 5 percent lighter than this material. In a research published by Journal of Science Advances, Markus Buehler with fellow workers showed how fusing and compression of graphene flakes created new material and solve some related to distinct weaknesses of graphene.
Graphene is pretty strong and not only has exceptional electrical and thermal but also optical and chemical properties. To create a new dimension of a graphene, the team consists of MIT scientists have created a sponge-like 3D model which is known to own only five percent of density of steel but at the same times is ten times stronger than it.
Graphene material is interestingly long but its normal form containing two dimensional thin sheets which are quite similar with atom thicknesses. However, based on the theory in can stretch on its width. To create graphene more practical, it requires to be changed into three dimensional form.
Graphene is always strong and even the strongest among all materials exist. However, the type of strength for two dimensions is not the same when the material is changed into 3 dimensions form. The research conducted by MIT scientists tried to find out about this problem. Instead of changing something into graphene, the scientist realized that the main solution laid on how the material used formed into amazing geometric patterns. This also showed that a light material can be transformed into stronger from by taking similar geometric feature.
Combining the heat and pressure, the scientists are able to compress the graphene flakes and create stronger structure, which is stable and look like a microscopic create which is  known as diatom and coral. With surface area bigger than its volume, the structure is proved to be highly strong.
Graphene material is just a thick atom but the geometric give new type of strength without adding the weight so it can be used in the big-scaled structures. For instance, the concrete in various structures like bridge can use the porous geometric to give stimulus strength only in the few part of additional load. As the form of inside air hole feature, it is also can be used to fix the isolator character or some of filtration systems for chemical process or water.
Recently, the news about graphene has been made after the scientists from Trinity College Dublin combined the material with Silly Putty to create a sensor which is quite sensitive to measure the spider’s traces.
